Maritime experts in Australia have confirmed they have located the wreckage of Captain James Cook’s ship

The Australian National Maritime Museum made the announcement after a 22-year search.

Known as the HMS Endeavour, it was discovered in Newport Harbour, off Rhode Island in the United States.

The Endeavour was scuttled in the harbour during the American War of Independence in 1788.

In 1770, it became the first European vessel to reach the east coast of Australia.

ANMN Director Kevin Sumption says the discovery is incredibly significant and he is convinced it is Captain Cook’s ship.
