“It’s atrocious” – Aussie Senator slams Federal Government India ban

The Australian Federal Government and Prime Minister Scott Morrison have been in the global spotlight after passing new jail-time laws on travellers returning from India. 4

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is now under pressure to overturn rules barring travel from COVID-ravaged India, but on Tuesday said it was “highly unlikely” that travellers would face maximum penalties of five years jail and a AUD $66,000 fine.

Australia last week banned all travellers from India, including its own citizens, from entering the country until May 15 due to the surge in COVID-19 cases there, and warned offenders will be prosecuted and penalised.

The temporary restrictions have been excoriated by lawmakers, expatriates and the Indian diaspora.

“This is a way to ensure we can prevent the virus coming back”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says measures against India are to protect Aussies on home soil.

In response to the new laws, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has slammed the Prime Minister and says the Federal Government has turned their backs on Australian people wanting to return home from a nation in a health crisis.

Hanson-Young has been vocal about the ruling against India returnees.
