Why Ireland is bringing back COVID-19 restrictions

As much of Europe battles an ongoing Covid surge, the Republic of Ireland will re-impose pandemic restrictions

Ireland’s PM says the “advice is now that everyone should work from home unless it is absolutely necessary”.

Additionally, bars, restaurants and nightclubs will be required to close their doors at midnight in a bid to stop excessive movement.

The PM also warns that if the number of Covid infections continues to grow at the current rate, “no health system will be able to cope”.

Close contacts of confirmed Covid-19 cases who are fully vaccinated and showing little-to-no symptoms will need to restrict their movement and receive three negative test results over five days.

Covid-19 vaccination passes will also be required for entry to cinemas and theatres but not for gyms and hairdressers.

However, there is some good news, with the nations’ economy able to stay largely open and functioning as a result of a successful vaccination rollout program.
