Following the US Supreme Court’s refusal to block the Texas state law that prohibits almost all abortions, President Joe Biden has vowed to do what he can to reverse the new legislation
In a 5 to 4 vote, the Supreme Court decided to deny an emergency appeal from abortion providers and others who wanted to block the new regulations.
The new Texas law prohibits any abortions once a heartbeat is detected, which is usually around 6 weeks into a pregnancy and well before most women know they are pregnant.
Biden says the new measures create “unconstitutional chaos and empower self-anointed enforcers to have devastating impacts”.
He continued adding, “for the majority of the Supreme Court to do this without a hearing… and without due consideration of the issues, insults the rule of law”.
The Biden administration will enlist the help of the Gender Policy Council and White House Counsel to “launch a whole-of-government effort to respond to this decision”… ensuring “that women in Texas have access to safe and legal abortions”.
The White House has also flagged that an expansion of th Supreme Court is not off the cards
