America’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has issued another moratorium – extending the nation’s Covid-19 eviction ban just days after the previous one expired

Cheddar’s US Political Director Megan Pratz says the moratorium will last for at least two more months

This latest CDC order will prevent landlords from evicting tenants in counties that are experiencing high Covid case numbers as the Delta variant spreads.

It’s expected that the ban will currently apply to around 90 per cent of America’s renter population.

President Joe Biden told reporters at the White House that the new eviction ban is intended to provide more time for renters and landlords to obtain financial assistance through a federal aid programme administered by states and localities.

The CDC says in a statement “a surge in evictions could lead to the immediate and significant movement of large numbers of persons … at a time when the Delta variant is driving COVID-19 cases at an unprecedented rate”.

The statement continues, adding “evicted renters must move, which leads to multiple outcomes that increase the risk of COVID-19 spread”.

“Today is a day of extraordinary relief,” Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “The imminent fear of eviction and being put out on the street has been lifted for countless families across America.”

The Supreme Court DID NOT rule on or even take up the case on the legality of the CDC eviction moratorium. Every minute wasted means another family could be forced onto the streets. Biden, #ExtendTheMoratorium now!

U.S. President Donald Trump has given Hamas three to four days to accept a U.S.-backed peace plan for Gaza, warning of severe consequences if they reject it.The plan, shared by mediators Qatar and Egypt, emerged after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed it during a visit to the White House. Hamas, which was not part of the talks, is expected to review the proposal that calls for disarmament, a previously rejected demand.

Trump stated that support for the plan came from both Israeli and Arab leaders, and he emphasised the need for Hamas to respond promptly. The proposal includes a ceasefire, hostage exchanges, an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and disarmament of Hamas, along with a transitional government.

A Hamas source described the plan as biased towards Israel and containing unacceptable conditions.

The group maintains that a complete Israeli withdrawal is a prerequisite for their agreement to any deal, while they are unwilling to disarm.

Pressure Mounts

Hamas faces significant pressure as foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, and Egypt have supported the initiative. Turkey’s intelligence head is also set to join discussions in Doha, marking a new level of mediation.

Despite expressing initial support, Netanyahu is cautious about the plan’s implications for Palestinian statehood and faces pressure from his coalition. Public sentiment in Gaza reflects a desire for peace, albeit with scepticism about the sincerity of both Trump and Netanyahu’s commitments.
