Asian stocks declined as investor sentiment remained low ahead of important central bank decisions and tech earnings reports.Previous trading concluded last week amid concerns about US attacks on Iran after the upcoming midterm elections, which compounded market unease.

Oil prices dropped slightly after reaching a six-month high last week, offering limited comfort to traders concerned about broader economic indicators.

Firms linked to AI faced challenges due to uncertainty surrounding the potential return on significant investments that had driven stock records earlier this year.

Earnings outlook

Investors are anxious about whether the vast sums invested in tech will yield returns amidst rising interest rates and bond yields questioning company finances.

Earnings reports from key U.S. firms including Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, as well as South Korean chipmakers SK hynix and Samsung, are expected this week.

Following last week’s results from Tesla and Meta, further concerns about spending emerged which negatively impacted stocks.

Stephen Innes from SPI Asset Management remarked on the AI sector’s critical earnings season, emphasizing the need for substantial proof of profitability from major firms.

Wall Street ended its last trading session with all three main indexes in decline, a trend that continued into the Asian markets where losses were observed in Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore, and Manila.

Oil prices fell more than one percent after a previous spike driven by supply concerns linked to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Speculation grows regarding the potential escalation of U.S. military action in Iran following the midterm elections, with the U.S. President indicating a tough decision ahead.

This week also brings significant policy decisions from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan, with the Fed likely to maintain current borrowing costs.

Market participants will be looking for insights into Fed policy direction following prior rate hikes as inflation remains above target levels.
