China has launched the uncrewed Shenzhou-22 spacecraft in a high-stakes rescue mission after damage to the Shenzhou-20 return craft left three astronauts unable to come home. The launch marks one of China’s most urgent responses to an in-orbit emergency.

The spacecraft lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center aboard the Long March-2F Y22 rocket, beginning what officials describe as a critical intervention to protect the Tiangong crew. This mission reinforces China’s rapidly expanding capabilities in human spaceflight.

Shenzhou-22 will serve as the emergency return vehicle, ensuring astronauts can safely depart the station following successful repairs.
