Universities reopen in Afghanistan following Taliban takeover

Published

Universities have reopened their doors in Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban took back control of the nation

Both men and women are able to attend campus, on the condition women remain separated from their male counterparts.

The move has been celebrated by leaders and human rights activists right around the world, and follows previous pledges by the Taliban to allow education to eventually resume.

There are reports female students in the eastern city of jalalabaad are required to enter via a separate door when attending university.

Under the Taliban’s previous regime from 1996 to 2001, the militant group barred women and girls from education.

Meanwhile, the group is remaining tight-lipped on its high school plans, with many provinces still banning girls from attending classrooms.
