Russia’s invasion to cause alarming food shortages

Published

There are growing fears Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could spark global food shortages within months

The United Nations is sounding the alarm, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres saying the war is leading to even more food insecurity in poorer nations and prices soar.

Guterres warns famines could last for years if Ukrainian exports don’t return to pre-war levels.

Ukraine is known for its large export quantities of sunflower oil, cereals and wheat.

The UN says food prices are almost 30% higher when compared with the same period last year.

Tens of millions of people are at risk of malnutrition, mass hunger and famine.

But there is hope, and Guterres says there is enough food in the world if we all work together.
