At least one dead as two earthquakes hit Iran

Published

on

Southern Iran has been hit by two earthquakes that occurred one after another, killing at least one person and sending the region into chaos

The tremors had a magnitude of 6.4 and 6.3 striking one minute apart on the Southern coast of the country.

Sunday’s quakes rumbled through neighbouring areas including Kerman and even Dubai, with Iran feeling aftershocks throughout the remainder of the day.

The victim that died was hit by an electricity pole while walking down a street.

Videos posted to social media showed a nearby mountain collapsing.

No further casualties or extensive damage have been reported by emergency officials thus-far.

Witnesses say the shakes were felt for about 30 seconds, with some of the affected provinces now experiencing electricity and internet outages.

The President spoke out about the earthquakes promising to discuss safety measures to implement in the future and ordering his first vice president to travel to the affected areas to personally assess the situation.

Electricity and internet outages have been reported in the affected provinces, some areas of which have also experienced disruptions in landline phones. Officials said they would be reconnected soon.

President Ebrahim Raisi ordered an immediate gathering of his cabinet to discuss measures to ensure the safety of affected areas. He also ordered his first vice president, Mohammad Mohkber, to travel to Hormozgan to personally assess the situation.
