Biden demands action on assault rifles

Published

on

President Joe Biden says he will work with Congress to “try to get rid of assault weapons” after a recent spate of shootings in the US.

The deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs involved an assault-style weapon and a handgun, while officials say the shooter at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, was armed with a handgun and multiple magazines.

President Biden called Richard Fierro to thank him for incapacitating the gunman who killed five people late Saturday at an LGBT club in Colorado Springs — with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre saying Fierro may have saved “dozens” of lives.

Fierro, an Army veteran who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, tackled 22-year-old suspect Anderson Lee Aldrich after he entered the bar and fired an AR-15-style rifle.

Meanwhile, President Biden has been asked about who will be his running mate in 2024. The President remained tight-lipped.
