Typhoon Muifa downgraded to a strong tropical storm

Typhoon in eastern China has been downgraded following flight and train cancellations

The typhoon threatening Shanghai has downgraded to being a strong tropical storm, meaning fears of severely damaging weather still looms.

Typhoon Muifa landed in eastern China at approximately 8:30pm local time. Wind speeds were going up to 151 kilometers per hour.

Winds like this are powerful enough to damage homes, and cause powerlines and trees to fall.

This strong typhoon is the second-highest in China’s tropical cyclone classification system. This makes it the 12th weather event of its kind to hit the nation this year.

So far all flights at Shanghai’s major airports have been cancelled. Plans have also been announced to limit speeds for ground elevated trains.

Despite the downgrade, heavy rains and flash flooding are still expected as the storm moves north across other coastal regions.
