Mixing and matching of vaccines will allow booster shots to be different to initial dose

The Food and Drug Administration has now authorised Johnson and Johnson and Moderna’s covid vaccines.

Additionally, “mixing and matching” of vaccines has also been approved, allowing Americans to receive a booster shot that is different to their initial dose.

The acting FDA Commissioner says “today’s actions demonstrate our commitment to public health in proactively fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic”.

She added that “as the pandemic continues to impact the country, science has shown that vaccination continues to be the safest and most effective way to prevent COVID-19, including the most serious consequences of the disease”.

The ruling will now be passed on to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and its vaccine advisory committee.

If signed off, vaccine doses could be administered promptly to those who are eligible.
