During a discussion, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang mentioned plans for new data centers in space.

The partnership involves designing servers for both space and terrestrial use, indicating an evolving relationship beyond simple chip supply.

Musk expressed joy in working with Huang’s team, while Huang appreciated Musk’s utilisation of Nvidia technology in AI projects.

The collaboration aims to leverage solar power in space, transmitting data to Earth via Starlink’s links.

The Starmind project, initiated in August, will use Nvidia hardware exclusively to construct SpaceX’s AI infrastructure.

SpaceX intends to deploy a space-optimised version of Nvidia’s Vera Rubin NVL72 system by late 2027.

Each Starmind AI1 satellite will contain powerful Nvidia processors, paving the way for a network of potentially one million satellites.

Despite ambitious plans, challenges such as launch costs and satellite maintenance remain significant.

Huang acknowledged concerns about the current economic viability of orbital data centers, suggesting long-term improvements are possible.

Space computing

Nvidia has been involved in various projects globally, illustrating the company’s expanding role in AI and computing infrastructure.

SpaceX’s substantial investment in Nvidia chips demonstrates the growing importance of AI in the aerospace sector.
