Bitcoin miners in Texas voluntarily power down ahead of heatwave.
Texas Bitcoin miners are shutting down this week as the state prepares for a heatwave that will put pressure on the power grid.
The state’s grid operator is asking residents and companies to conserve as much energy as possible, as temperatures are set to hit over 100 Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius.
Miners are reportedly turning off their machines, which use over 1000 megawatts of electricity.
It’s understood the decision will free around one per cent of the grid’s total capacity.
Texas has seen a rise in Bitcoin miners after China placed a ban on the practice.
The process validates new transactions on the blockchain and allows miners to earn a range of fresh tokens.
