Cynoptec has unveiled a new independent long-range climate forecasting model capable of predicting weather patterns up to six months in advance, marking a significant leap beyond the one to seven-day outlook offered by most existing forecasting systems.

The model was developed by Townsville-based Stuart Williams.

The system uses historical weather data and pattern recognition to identify recurring seasonal trends, helping forecast events such as tropical lows, frontal systems and heat troughs while estimating when they are most likely to occur.

One of its standout features is advanced cyclone forecasting, providing projections on where cyclones could form, their expected path, landfall timing and the period coastal communities may be affected.

The model has been refined using hindcasting, testing its accuracy against historical weather events.

Williams developed the technology to help industries move from reactive responses to proactive planning.

It could prove valuable for agriculture, insurance and disaster preparedness, and while it has initially been developed for Australia, the model has the potential to forecast weather events around the world.
