Ari Hawkins highlights tech firms’ struggle amid US lawmakers’ concerns over China, as Nvidia and AMD seek to influence export controls

Nvidia and AMD are stepping up lobbying efforts in Washington as Congress considers tighter restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips to China.

The two US chipmakers are seeking White House support to prevent proposed restrictions from being included in the annual defence policy bill.

The measures have bipartisan backing and would give lawmakers greater oversight of chip exports.

Ari Hawkins from Politico says the companies are navigating a divide between President Donald Trump’s focus on maintaining US technology sales and lawmakers’ national security concerns over advanced chips reaching China.

The dispute could become a key battleground in the broader US-China technology relationship, with Congress weighing whether commercial access to the Chinese market should be further restricted.
