U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen

In a move that will anger Chinese diplomats, U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen.

Tsai is scheduled to make a stopover in California after a state visit to Central America.

McCarthy’s office says the “bipartisan” meeting will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, just outside Los Angeles.

China’s LA consulate has since responded, saying it “firmly opposeds” Tsai’s U.S. transits, adding the meeting is “not conducive to regional peace, security and stability”.

The consulate also warning it will undermine “the political foundation of China-U.S. relations.”

McCarthy is the most senior Republican lawmaker and second in line to the U.S. presidency, after vice-president Kamala Harris.

The meeting follows his predecessor, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, visiting Taiwan’s main island last year.
