Pope Leo XIV has delivered his first message following surgery for lung cancer in Rome, thanking supporters for their prayers as he continues his recovery.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13 after doctors discovered a small nodule in his lung during routine medical examinations.

The Vatican confirmed that the operation was successful, with surgeons removing the lower lobe of his right lung after tests identified a form of lung cancer known as adenocarcinoma.

In his first message following the procedure, Pope Leo expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he had received from Catholics around the world, while asking the faithful to continue praying for his recovery.

The Vatican says the pontiff is recovering as expected, with public appearances and scheduled audiences cancelled until October 20 to allow him time to rest.

Attention is also turning to his planned visit to South America in November, which includes stops in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.

While the trip remains on the Vatican’s schedule, the Pope’s recovery and further medical assessments will be important in determining whether he can undertake the demanding international journey.

The surgery marks the first major publicly disclosed health challenge of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, with millions of Catholics around the world following updates on his condition.
