The Supreme Court found Scotland’s First Minister can’t hold the vote without Westminster approval.

Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a referendum on 19 October next year.

But the UK Government has refused to grant formal consent.

In court, President Lord Reed found Scotland does not have those powers under the current constitution.

He said these issues are the responsibility of the UK Parliament.

He even rejected Scotland’s calls that a vote would have no legal effect on the union.
