Closure rates in this industry are nearly double the average rate of 6.69 per cent across the economy.

A report indicated that 12 out of every 100 cafes and restaurants operating last year are no longer in business.

Analysts attribute the high closure rate to rising costs that operators cannot control amid declining consumer spending.

Ten per cent of cafes and restaurants are reported to be 60 days or more behind on payments, nearly twice the national average.

The sector’s trade payment default rate is at 1.15 per cent, indicating a future increase in failures.

CreditorWatch chief executive Patrick Coghlan highlighted that high default rates signal ongoing stress in the sector.

Despite challenges, many businesses struggling are well-managed and affected by increased costs.

Wages have risen approximately 3 per cent annually since mid-2022, with minimum wage earnings increasing 30.1 per cent in the same period.

Additionally, energy prices and supply costs, particularly for beverages and ingredients, have surged due to various economic factors.

Coghlan noted that the hospitality sector still needs to adjust to the new cost pressures.

Sector struggles

The combination of high operating costs and reduced customer spending puts these businesses in a precarious position.

Many owners are concerned about the future viability of their operations.

Efforts to cushion the impact of these challenges are crucial moving forward.
