Despite China’s increasing economic and geopolitical issues, leader Xi Jinping is pushing for another term at the top job

At the upcoming  20th National Congress, President Xi is expected to hold onto authority.

This means the Communist Party leader would remain as President for another 5 years.

The move has never been done before by a Chinese leader. However, comes as no surprise because it was Xi that scrapped the presidential term limits. This has made his road to power an unchallenged breeze.

However, the move comes amid rising tensions in China as Covid cases surge, businesses crumble and international tensions boil over.

China continues to strive for it zero-covid policy, despite the rest of the world learning to live with the virus. Recent outbreaks in the country have forced millions of its residents into lengthy lockdowns.

Economically, businesses are struggling to survive off the back of the prolonged lockdowns. The people of China are beginning the struggle with the cost of living, unable to enjoy the normal pleasures of life in the country.

More broadly, tensions in Taiwan and China’s mission to reunify the region have caused geopolitical tensions.

The past few months have been anything but smooth sailing for President Xi, although the chaos has not dampened his mission to remain in power.
