Andrew McLeod discusses impact of standalone AFL team in NT on young Indigenous players with Tim Harcourt on Footynomics

In Short:
– Andrew McLeod discusses the benefits of a standalone AFL team in the Northern Territory for young Indigenous players.
– He believes a local team would enhance talent development, community engagement, and provide role models for aspiring athletes.

Two-time Norm Smith medalist Andrew McLeod discussed the potential benefits of a standalone AFL team in the Northern Territory on Footynomics with host Tim Harcourt.Growing up in Katherine and Darwin, McLeod had limited access to professional football, mostly watching highlights on a local program.

He attributes his development to NT representative teams, school football, and mentors like Peter Atkinson and Michael McLean.

His career took off after moving to Adelaide as a teenager, leading to a premiership with the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL before being drafted into the AFL with the Adelaide Crows.

McLeod outlined several advantages of establishing a professional team in Darwin. A local team would let young athletes remain in their comfortable environment with family support, avoiding “culture shock” from relocating.

He stated that having local role models would inspire youth in a way that television cannot.

Additionally, a home team would offer a consistent pathway for local talent to develop, akin to some NT players thriving on the Gold Coast.

An elite team would also engage consistently with the community, motivating the younger generation to pursue professional sports.
