Buffalo marks one year since tragic mass shooting at supermarket, which left 10 people dead

It’s been one year since the tragic mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, which left 10 people dead and a community wounded forever.

Family members of those who were killed joined survivors, local officials, first responders and religious leaders to reflect on the tragedy.

Mayor Byron Brown read the victims’ names before a moment of silence.

Governor Kathy Hochul and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer were among those who also gave speeches.

Hochul says racism did not win on that fateful day.

Earlier in the week, a panel discussed ways to combat racism and social media radicalisation.

President Joe Biden honoured the lives of those killed in Buffalo in an op-ed, in which he called on Congress and state leaders to act by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The president also wants to see background checks for all gun sales, and a repeal of gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability.

His administration passed a landmark gun measure in June following a series of mass shootings.
