Australia to send additional support to Ukraine

Published

on

More support may be on the way for Ukraine following a recent spate of deadly Russian missile attacks directed at the country’s major cities

It’s been a terrifying few days for Ukrainians – could it lead to greater Western aid?

Today, Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles announced the federal government is considering sending troops to Ukraine to help train the nation’s armed forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says these recent attacks are a direct response to what he labels a ‘terrorist attack’ on the key bridge connecting Russia with annexed-Crimea.

At least 14 people have lost their lives because of the assault.

Back in Australia, the defence minister also met with Ukraine’s Ambassador to the country.

The Ambassador has labelled the attack “horrendous” and says his children grew up near a playground hit by one of the missiles.

He has also called on the Australian government to provide more support to his nation.

The defence minister says his government needs to make sure it is supporting Ukraine over the long term, so the country’s armed forces can resolve this conflict and end it on their own.

As Western support continues to flood into Ukraine, it’s not only troops that may be offered up – it’s also expected the Australian government will supply additional weaponry to be used in this great fight against Russia.
