Pope Francis pleaded to everyone – including “those with political and social responsibilities” – to be more open

Pope Francis has used his visit to Hungary to address the migration crisis.

During an open-air mass, he urged the nation’s residents to open their doors and welcome migrants.

During his speech, the Pontiff said it was “sad and painful” to see doors closed to people who were “unlike us”.

Hungary is led by a nationalist anti-immigration cabinet.

Orban is critical of migration, even building a barbed-wire border fence to stop people crossing into Hungary.

Pope Francis pleaded to everyone – including “those with political and social responsibilities” – to be more open.

The Argentinian also referred to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which was launched more than a year ago.

He prayed for the “Ukrainian people and the Russian people” and for “a future of hope, not war”.
