UAE becomes first Gulf state to commit to net zero

The first country in the Persian Gulf has committed to net zero emissions by 2050

Known largely for its stocks of oil and gas, producing an average of 4 million barrels per day, The United Arab Emirates announced the decision at Expo 2020 in Dubai on Thursday.

This climate target will allow the country to align with the Paris Agreement on climate, helping to slow global warming.

The UAE government says “the major economic opportunities offered by the path to net zero directly support a vision to develop the Emirates into the most dynamic economy in the world”.

Dubai’s leader also declared an investment of 600 billion dirhams (dee-rems) in renewable energy to reduce their emissions.
