Will the world learn from the death of George Floyd?

Professor Clare Corbould from Deakin University says reform might not be enough to change the US justice system.

George Floyd is just one name in a long list of African Americans to have died as a result of police brutality.

This week, former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering Floyd.

The jury unanimously convicted Chauvin of second and third degree murder, and manslaughter after the ex-officer pinned Floyd to the ground till he couldn’t breathe.

Following the verdict, crowds cheers outside the heavily guarded courthouse with people chanting “All three counts” and “Whose victory? Our victory!”

Floyd’s brother, Philonise was the only family member in court. He says he“was just praying they would find him guilty”.

US President Joe Biden has labeled “systemic racism” as a stain on the nation’s soul. He says the George Floyd trial “can be a giant step forward” for the country.
