A run-off between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his main challenger looks increasingly likely

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has delivered a jubilant and energetic speech to his followers gathered outside the Justice and Development party headquarters in the capital.

The speech appears to be an attempt to seize control of the narrative in a tightly contested national vote.

The opposition says many of their votes are yet to be included in the official tally.

Erdoğan initially promised a more subdued election campaign following the deadly earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people, but recently switched back to staging regular rallies.

Now, a run-off between the president and his main challenger has become increasingly likely, after Turkey’s most closely-fought election in decades

If neither candidates secure 50 per cent of the total vote, there will be a second poll in two weeks’ time.

Erdogan says he is ready for a run-off poll if necessary, but believes he can still win outright.
