Finland’s PM Sanna Marin shuts down CNN reporter

Sanna Marin doesn’t want to talk about her age or gender

When Sanna Marin was sworn in as Finland’s PM, she became the world’s youngest serving leader.

But that’s not something she wants to talk about.

CNN and Washington Post journalist Fareed Zakaria found this out the hard way.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Zakaria said: “I know that you don’t like to talk about your role as a very young woman in this very important job.”

Marin replied: “And we don’t have to. You know, we don’t have to go there.”

Zakaria attempts to salvage his question, asking whether the Finnish leader has furthered a women’s agenda on certain issues.

But Marin insists her gender is in no way connected with the issues her government has faced recently – with most of her time devoted to major crises like the war in Ukraine.

Marin isn’t afraid to take on reporters, previously calling out questions about both her gender and age.

Speaking to Vogue in 2020, she says, “In every position I’ve ever been in, my gender has always been the starting point – that I am a young woman.

“I hope one day it won’t be an issue, that this question won’t be asked. I want to do as good a job as possible. I’m no better and no worse than a middle-aged man.”
