Nearly five years after appointing a 24-Hour Economy Commissioner in response to the lockout era, the state has shifted from restrictive policies to a more enabling approach.

The Vibrancy Reform Agenda encourages flexible trading hours, alfresco dining, and later-night business activity to help revitalise communities.

The strategy also focuses on developing diverse nightlife precincts across Greater Sydney, improving transport, safety, and accessibility through collaboration between government and industry.

Rodrigues says modern nightlife is no longer centred solely on alcohol, but increasingly includes arts, culture, sport, dining, and entertainment.

Supporting the state’s overnight workforce is another priority.

With around 30% of workers employed between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the Night Worker Action Plan aims to improve access to health, nutrition, and essential services.

Rodrigues says intentional planning will be key to ensuring the nighttime economy remains accessible and benefits communities for years to come.
