Many of Twitter’s high-profile users are losing the blue check marks that have helped to verify their identity.

The social media company promised it would be taking away the tick from accounts that weren’t going to pay a monthly fee to retain it.

Twitter had approximately 300,000 verified users under the system.

High-profile users who lost their blue checks include Beyonce, Pope Francis and former President Donald Trump.

The costs of keeping the marks range from $8 a month for individual web users to a starting price of $1,000 a month to verify an organisation.

Twitter does not verify the individual accounts to ensure people say who they are.
