Gene Hackman, 95, and wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, found dead at home; daughter suspects carbon monoxide poisoning amidst suspicious circumstances.

In Short

Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead at their home in New Mexico, with authorities deeming the deaths suspicious but not indicating foul play. Hackman’s daughter suggested carbon monoxide poisoning as a potential cause, although initial inspections found no gas issues, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Gene Hackman’s daughter has suggested a theory around the recent deaths of her father, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63. They were found dead alongside their dog in their New Mexico home. Authorities indicate no signs of foul play but have described the deaths as “suspicious.”

Elizabeth Jean Hackman mentioned the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning as a cause. However, initial inspections by the fire brigade and gas company found no obvious issues with the home’s gas lines.

Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were last seen publicly on March 28, 2024, during a dinner date in Santa Fe. They were occasionally spotted out, but generally kept a low profile.

Authorities reported the investigation is ongoing. A search warrant listed various unusual observations during the scene inspection. Among these were an unsecured front door and a healthy dog running on the property. Signs of decomposition indicated that Betsy may have been deceased for some time.

Witnesses shared that the couple had not been seen for about two weeks prior to the discovery of their bodies. The police have not yet disclosed the official cause of death. Gene Hackman is renowned for roles in acclaimed films like The French Connection and Unforgiven. He married Betsy in 1991 and they did not have children together, though he has three from his first marriage.
