Tokyo and its surrounding areas have been hit by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

More than 20 people were injured in the quake, which struck just after 10:40pm local time.

It is the strongest shake to the capital since the 2011 earthquake disaster.

Television footage showed a home on fire, water leak, and a partially derailed passenger train.

Japan’s meteorological agency warns that a quake of similar intensity could occur within the week.

Officials are estimating a 10 to 20 per cent chance of aftershocks based on previous events.
