China is pressuring Uyghurs overseas into staying silent on treatment back home

China’s treatment of the Uyghur ethnic group in the western province of Xinjiang has brought international condemnation. But how far does that power reach?

Reports have been around for years of centres in China housing thousands of Uyghurs, one of China’s muslim ethnic minorities.

In these centres these people are subject to “reeducation” as the state puts it, to make them more closely align with the Han majority population.

However critics of this move say this is far more sinister than this, where family members are disappeared for any display of dissidence.

Now there are reports that even Uyghurs living overseas are being pressured by the Government into spying on fellow Uyghurs trying to shed light on the issue.
