Artists raise alarm bells over Lensa’s use of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is turning portraits into creative works through the latest online trend

Lensa is using artificial intelligence to create striking self-portraits.

Once a user submits an image of themselves, the app uses a library of images to render new ‘Magical Avatars’.

Lensa recommends users submit up to 20 images for the most accurate results.

Users are encouraged to submit close up images, which include a variety of facial features.

The app offers a yearlong subscription and some editing features for $35.99.

The so-called ‘Magic Avatars’ require an additional fee but some users can opt-in for a free trial.

Lensa has attracted some concerns by Australian artists, who believe the app is taking their works.

The artists said the app is in violation of copyright laws.

But the parent company behind the app, Prisma has defended its use of images.

“As soon as the avatars are generated, the user’s photos and the associated model are erased permanently from our servers,” the company said.

The AI image generator has been a trending theme on TikTok and Instagram.
