The Australian Football League has a new boss.

Andrew Dillon has been appointed as the next chief executive of the AFL following a 12-month search.

He will replace outgoing CEO Gillon McLachlan.

Dillon will take over at the end of the men’s AFL season, with an official start date of October 2.

This will allow McLachlan to finalise a number of key issues including the entry of Tasmania into the competition, a new pay deal with players and an inquiry into alleged racism at the Hawthorn Football Club.

Dillon has been McLachlan’s second in charge at the AFL and has long been viewed as the leading candidate to replace him.

He was up against a large number of high-profile candidates, including Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, Western Bulldogs president Kylie Watson-Wheeler and other fellow AFL executives.

The AFL is the nation’s biggest sporting body.
