Chinese carrier group in Western Pacific for training: Taiwan

Published

on

On Monday, a Chinese naval formation, led by the aircraft carrier Shandong, transited through waters 60 nautical miles (111km) southeast of Taiwan, entering the western Pacific for training, as reported by Taiwan’s defence ministry.

The ministry also noted that at 5:40 a.m., it detected 11 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, within Taiwan’s air defence identification zone, prompting a measured response from Taiwanese forces.

The Shandong, commissioned in 2019, had previously participated in military exercises near Taiwan in April and sailed through the Taiwan Strait in June.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, a U.S. and a Canadian warship conducted a joint mission through the Taiwan Strait, the second such mission since June, coinciding with the G20 summit attended by the leaders of both nations.

These developments highlight heightened tensions between China and Taiwan, fueled by Beijing’s persistent military activities near the democratically governed island, driven by concerns over perceived collusion between Taiwan and the United States.

Taiwan strongly disputes China’s sovereignty claims over the island.
