French President Emmanuel Macron warns the world is in ‘a crisis of democracies

During an exclusive interview with CNN, French President Emmanuel Macron says the world is in “a crisis of democracies.”

He continued by saying after years of “pressure and destabalisation” all countries should be worried, including the U.S.

“I hate lecturing people and saying, ‘I’m worried for you.’ … But I do believe that what is at stake is what we built in the 18th century…

“I think we have [a] big crisis of democracies, of what I would call liberal democracies. Let’s be clear about that. Why? First, because being open societies and being open and very cooperative democracies put pressure on your people. It could destabilize them.”

Macron described the importance of respecting people’s willingness, the middle class, and different cultures.

The French leader also blamed social media for the strain on democracy, and for driving “fake news”.

“[Social media is] a killer for all democracies, because it’s completely breaking the relationship to truth, and to science, and the basis of our own democracy.”
