Xi Jinping wants the West to see China as “loveable”

China’s President, Xi Jinping called for Chinese officials to create a “trustworthy, lovable and respectable” image for the country.

Xi Jinping made the statement amid growing tensions between China and many western nations.

The latest remarks from China’s leader suggest the country is looking to curb its hard-edged diplomatic approach.

Xi Jinping says the country must “make friends extensively, unite the majority and continuously expand its circle of friends with those who understand and are friendly to China.”

China looks to repair relationships in the West

Experts suggest the statement indicates Xi Jinping may be starting to rethink his global communication strategy.

Wang YI Wei from Renmin University says “China’s image in the West has deteriorated since the pandemic.”

They further stressed “this needs to be taken seriously.”

This comes as US President Joe Biden attempts to repair relations on the back of the Trump administration.

He added “the growth in China’s power needs to be accepted by the world. That would be the real growth of power.”

Concerns in the West over China’s human right’s abuses

Tensions between China and the West have been largely taut, with Australia and New Zealand recently raising “grave concerns” over human right’s abuses in the country.

China’s leaders have made it clear that they do not want interference when it comes to international concerns over alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang province.

It follows Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison and New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern, meeting this week to discuss ways to move forward with China.
