Why is a U.S. government agency investigating ChatGPT?

The Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into the popular chatbot ChatGPT.

 
The FTC says it’s investigating whether the AI tool, ChatGPT has harmed people by generating inaccurate information about them.

The agency wrote that it’s looking into whether the company has “engaged in unfair or deceptive practices relating to risks of harm to consumers, including reputational harm.”

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, responded saying that it is important to them that their technology is safe and pro-consumer, adding that he is confident the company follows the law.
