Ukrainian long-range drones targeted the Petersburg Oil Terminal on Wednesday, igniting fuel storage tanks as Vladimir Putin’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum began.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack, marking a significant strike amid the event.

Zelenskyy stated that the drones hit targets approximately 1,100 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, including the Kronstadt naval base and a weapons production site in Tambov.

Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that Russian air defenses shot down 50 drones overnight.

Infrastructure damage occurred in the Kronstadt, Kirovsky, and Krasnoselsky districts, resulting in injuries but no fatalities, according to St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the interception of at least 20 drones aimed at the capital.

Forum under pressure

The timing of the attack seemed intended to disrupt the forum’s intended message of strength.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, occurring from June 3 to 6, is expected to welcome around 20,000 attendees from 100 nations.

Saudi Arabia is the guest country, represented by Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng is also in Russia for the event.

The strike adds to Ukraine’s ongoing campaign against Russian energy infrastructure.

Between January and May, Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted 15 Russian oil refineries, impacting about 40% of Russia’s refining capacity.

The Petersburg Oil Terminal, crucial for Russian exports, has been attacked multiple times this year.
