Twitter cracks down on spam accounts

Twitter is seeking to remove more that 1 million spam accounts on the platform each day

Twitter executives are sharing more details about fake accounts on their platform.

The company says under 5 per cent of all users are spam accounts. It follows a probe from billionaire Elon Musk, who is seeking more transparency from the social media giant.

Musk has threatened to stop his recent $44 billion deal to purchase the company unless it shows proof of fake accounts being fewer than 5 per cent on the platform.

The company says it cannot calculate the number of spam accounts through external sources.

It has also remained tight-lipped on what data it is providing to Musk.

Musk has previously accused the social media company of “thwarting” his requests to learn more about its user base.

He says he is entitled to do his own measurements in relation to the number of spam accounts.
