Trump claims Iran will hand over enriched uranium as peace talks progress amidst ongoing military tensions
In Short:
– Iran will dilute enriched uranium under IAEA supervision amid peace negotiations and U.S. involvement.
– Despite Trump’s optimism, major negotiation differences remain as tensions continue to rise.
President Donald Trump announced that Iran has agreed to give up its enriched uranium stockpile amid ongoing negotiations for a peace deal.
Negotiations have reduced ambitions to a temporary agreement to avoid a return to hostilities before the ceasefire ends on April 21.
Iran uranium deal
A source indicated that Iran will dilute its enriched uranium under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the U.S. A senior Iranian official stated that Tehran had previously agreed to dilute 450 kilograms of uranium but claimed the U.S. reneged on the agreement.
Trump’s optimistic remarks contrast with the ongoing negotiation realities. After extensive talks last weekend, Vice President JD Vance reported that Iran did not accept U.S. terms regarding uranium enrichment.
Major differences remain, while mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey aim to reconcile opposing views. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi cautioned that weak inspection measures could lead to false assurances of a successful agreement.
Before the ongoing military actions began in February, Iran had approximately 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, sufficient for nuclear weapons. Many of these materials are believed to be hidden in fortified locations.
President Donald Trump believes the war will be over soon.
Military tensions rise
Despite Trump’s assertions, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that U.S. forces are prepared to act against Iranian facilities if negotiations fail. A naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in place.
Iran claims its uranium enrichment rights are non-negotiable but has shown some flexibility in talks. Tehran’s earlier proposal involved exporting part of its enriched uranium while diluting the remainder.
With the ceasefire expiring soon, further negotiations in Pakistan are anticipated. Trump will not attend but expressed optimism about upcoming discussions.
