In Short:
– Host Belinda Coates interviews Dr Anna Edwards about the 2026 report on Australia’s nighttime economy growth and challenges.
– The industry is diversifying beyond alcohol, enhancing city livability and providing services for night shift workers.

Australia’s nighttime economy is booming, with new research showing record levels of jobs, businesses and sales turnover as cities embrace a more diverse after-dark economy.

Speaking with The Connector host Belinda Coates, Dr Anna Edwards from the University of Melbourne and Ingenium Research said the 2026 Australian Nighttime Economy Report found 4.1 million Australians, nearly one in three workers, are employed at night, highlighting the sector’s growing importance.

The report shows nightlife is shifting beyond alcohol, with food, entertainment, sport and cultural experiences driving stronger community connections and making cities safer and more vibrant.

Melbourne recorded the strongest growth in jobs and economic activity, while New South Wales has been recognised for its strategic approach to managing the nighttime economy.

Changing consumer habits have also seen Thursday emerge as a major social night following the pandemic.

Dr Edwards said a successful 24-hour economy requires coordinated planning across government, including transport, safety and cultural policy.

The report also found that investment in arts and entertainment boosts spending at nearby restaurants, bars and other local businesses, while thoughtful planning helps balance vibrant nightlife with growing inner-city residential communities.
