Senators raise concerns about harmful content across social media platforms

Executives from YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat were confronted by Senators on Tuesday about the safety of young users on their platforms.

Concern was raised about the harm inflicted upon young people including eating disorders, sexually explicit content and the promotion of addictive drugs.

The Senators voiced the need for legislation that protects children on social media at a Senate commerce subcommittee on consumer protection.

One senator stated that the problem was clear and that “big tech preys on children and teens to make more money”.

This all comes after Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed the serious harm Instagram imposes on teens.

The Panel’s chairman says that YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat have similar negative effects.
