The Wikipedia community want to ban crypto donations

Wikipedia’s parent company could soon end its support for crypto donations after an overwhelming vote

Seventy-one per cent of contributors are calling for the project’s foundation to stop accepting digital assets.

Those in favour of ending crypto donations have raised concerns around the environmental impacts of crypto mining.

The process adds new transactions to the blockchain in cryptocurrencies that use a proof-of-work routine.

Meanwhile, those who support its continued acceptance believe that proof-of-stake crypto demands little energy.

It comes roughly eight years after Wikimedia, the company’s umbrella organisation, first began to accept crypto in 2014.

The vote and request for comments on donations began in January.
