Japan’s government has withdrawn a controversial immigration bill after facing mounting criticism.

Debate over the bill, was sparked by the death of a Sri Lankan young woman held in an immigration detention facility.

The actual bill would have made it easier to deport failed asylum seekers and given more power to immigration authorities.

While the government proposed the bill,,, lawyers and activists say it went against international norms.

Japan currently has a significantly lower rate of accepting asylum seekers than any other developed country.
