A terrorist attack in New Orleans resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and injuries to more than 30 others on New Year’s Day.
The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, drove a pickup truck displaying an Islamic State flag into a crowd in the French Quarter.
Authorities discovered weapons and a possible explosive device in the vehicle and are investigating Jabbar’s connections to terrorist organisations.
He had a social media presence that suggested he was a military veteran, and U.S. Army officials are looking into his service history.
The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. in a busy area filled with holiday festivities.
After exiting his vehicle and brandishing an assault rifle, Jabbar was confronted by police, who fatally shot him.
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick condemned the attack, stating Jabbar aimed to cause maximum harm.
President Biden expressed condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming a commitment to combat violence.
The injured were transported to various hospitals.
Officials have raised alarms about the potential for local attacks in light of the ongoing conflicts abroad.
This incident follows a worrying trend of vehicle attacks, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures at events.
The city was preparing for multiple New Year activities, including a significant football game later in the week.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the attack unfolded, with many confused about the nature of the sounds they heard.
