Singapore passes new law to tackle foreign interference

Singapore has passed a new law to tackle foreign interference and meddling in domestic politics

The law was raised three years ago, and follows weeks of hotly debated topics across the city-state.

The nation’s Home Affairs Minister says the Bill addresses a “serious threat that concerns our national security and sovereignty”.

The Law seeks to enhance Singapore’s sovereignty, and ensures the nation makes its “own choices” on how MPs should “govern” and live their lives.

16 M-Ps from both sides of the aisle surfaced criticisms and concerns raised by lawyers.

It was passed overnight with 75 MPs voting “yes”. Some made suggestions for greater checks and balances, citing “extensive” discretion for authorities.
